Chiropractor in Overland Park | Dr. Sean Bennington
Simply put, I was a skeptic...

Prior to my Chiropractic career I worked as a computer programmer designing web-sites. After years of poor posture and long work hours spent staring at a computer screen, one day I bent over to pick up a 3 lb laptop and tore two discs in my back. I collapsed to my knees as I felt this jolt of electricity shoot up and down my spine. Since I knew nothing about chiropractic I did everything my medical doctor told me to do. I tried muscle relaxers and pain killers...they barely touched the pain. I tried physical therapy, but after months with no results I eventually gave up.
My Chiropractic Story...
Every day for months it would take every ounce of will power for me just to make it through the day at work. I would come home from work exhausted and completely drained because of the pain and would end up spending the evening laid out on the couch simply hoping to take the edge off of the pain. The pain made me "short" and irritable with my family. I didn't feel as if I could be a good father to my children nor a good husband to my wife. My family life was being affected and my work was suffering. I knew I had to make some changes or I could lose everything that was important to me.
So I went back to my medical doctor and he recommended surgery. He recommended removing the problematic discs and fusing my spine together. Something just didn't seem right about this solution...the though of having my spine fused together at 27 years of age just didn't sit right with my spirit.
As I did the research I found that the odds of needing a second surgery after the initial surgery went up dramatically. I also found that there were some SERIOUS risks of having this surgery, such as paralysis, death or even having to live with worse pain than I was currently experiencing for the rest of my life. There had to be another way!
I didn't believe in Chiropractic, but it changed my life
That is when a friend of mine told me to go see her chiropractor. I told her "I didn't really believe in chiropractic" and I have never forgotten her response which was "you don't have to believe in chiropractic for it to work". She went on to say that "you can choose not to believe in gravity, but if you jump off of a building it still works!" So to make a long story short, I went to see this chiropractor and he changed my life. Not only was my pain eliminated, but I could see visible changes in my spine on the x-rays. The thing that made no sense to me was that the digestive system issues I had been experiencing also went away.
When I was going through my own hard-times I often questioned why God would put me through this painful situation. Well, now I know. I would have never changed my career and occupation if it hadn't been for this experience. I also know what it is like for each and every patient who walks into my Overland Park Chiropractic office and is hurting. I know what it is like to have intense pain that interferes with what it is like to live a normal life. As a result of my experience I am able to understand what a patient is going through. My experience allows me to provide comfort, compassion and guidance in this time of pain. My own personal mission is to help as many people as I can by providing my patients with the best care that provides "lasting" results.
On a personal note...
I am married to my wonderful wife Sheila and we have four amazing children; Drew, Alli, Noah and our newborn Isaiah. Besides my spiritual life, the only thing more important than helping others is spending time with my family. We work late hours, but I rush home every night so that I can play and wrestle with my son Noah before bed time.
I am an avid Chiefs fan and LOVE watching football. I enjoy nerdy activities like Geocaching and computer programming, and am involved with our church Westside Family Church, but consider Antioch church my “second” church. I am also involved with fundraising for Children’s Miracle Network, Drumm Foundation and the Girl Scouts organization.
Often times people ask me if I practice what I preach and the simple answer is..."Yes"
We eat organic nutritional food without all of the artificial colors and sweeteners. I still receive chiropractic care several times a week and I treat my family most nights when I get home from work. It has been years since I have taken any medication because I believe that the body has the power to heal as long as it is functioning properly.
You see, every single cell, tissue and organ in the body is controlled by our nervous system. Our nervous system tells our heart to beat, it tells our lungs to breathe and it even tells a cut on our leg to heal. In order for this communication to take place this information has to be sent from the brain down the spinal cord and out to the rest of the body. Interference in this process results in decreased communication and ultimately what happens if there is decreased communication between your brain and your heart? Less information to your heart = less function. Diminished function over time ultimately leads to failure. This is why my family and I see our care as so essential to our bodies. It is amazing to watch all of the miracles that take place in our office when the brain has a chance to properly heal problem areas. The body needs no help in healing, it simply needs no interference.
We allow the body to heal on its own whenever possible and use medication as a last resort
An example of our bodies own healing power takes place every time one of our children have a fever. Before knowing what I know now, every time one of our children had a fever or a sniffle we would give them medication... we hated to see them suffering. Now I know that a fever is the best defense we could possibly have against any sickness.
Our body creates the fever because it knows that when it raises our temperature it kills off any attacking virus or bacteria so that it can overcome that which is attacking it. However, when we take Tylenol or Motrin we actually lower our body temperature and interfere with the body's natural healing ability. The end result is a longer sickness, a weakened immune system and side effects of the medication such as liver or kidney damage.
My family and I aren't anti-medicine, but we simply allow the body to heal on it's own whenever possible and use medication as a last resort. What we have found is that we don't need it.
